Bridgewater State School of Social Work Post-master’s Certificate in Substance Use Disorders
This six-week certificate at the post-master’s level is designed to focus on an understanding of and treatment approaches to one of the most potentially plaguing and painful issues impacting families, teens, adults and communities. The discussion will include case-based material drawing on the dilemmas encountered by the participants in their practice, as well as best practices and experience of the presenters.
In addition to the outline below, currently prevalent substances of misuse will be covered with attention to assessment and intervention.

THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM WILL COVER:
- Substance use disorders using a biopsychosocial perspective, including a review of neurobiological impact of substances, including but not limited to alcohol, marijuana, opiates and stimulants
- Assessment of adolescents and adults with substance use and co-occurring disorders with attention to the intersectionality of race, gender, ethnicity, culture and socioeconomic status
- Treatment strategies including but not limited to motivational interviewing, harm reduction, relapse prevention, medication and trauma informed approaches
- Examination of personal bias, the use of self, and self-care in substance abuse specific professional work
- Approaches to ethical challenges and evaluating practice interventions
