Description: Participants will be introduced to tools that will enable them to work more effectively with chemically dependent African Americans with substance use disorders. 



Participants will be introduced to: 

  • Strategies for engaging African Americans in addictions treatment within the first 5 minutes of contact 
  • Strategies for overcoming barriers to mistrust 
  • Effective cross-cultural counseling 
  • Culturally-specific approaches 
  • How to partner with indigenous healers in the African American community to promote recovery 

Presented by: Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC 

Mr. Sanders, is an International speaker in the Behavioral Health Field whose presentations have reached thousands throughout the United States, Europe, Canada and the Caribbean Islands. A lecturer at The University of Chicago, Mark is the author of five books, including, "Treating the African American Male Substance Abuser" and "Counseling Chemically Dependent African American Women". He has had two stories published in the New York Times Best Selling Book Series Chicken Soup for the Soul.
