Description Narrative:

When a person or family enters substance use recovery, their chances for success are significantly improved when they are supported by family members and people who care about them. Families throughout the Commonwealth are involved in SU treatment at various levels of care. This training will address and provide methods and strategies to enhance the provider’s toolkit for increasing family involvement and connection to strengthen long-term recovery. This day-long training will utilize didactic learning, interactive activities, and a panel of people with valuable lived experience in championing engagement as part of the healing process. Come be a part of this movement in the struggle against disconnection and isolation.

  • This training is recommended for providers who work directly with individuals and families affected by substance use.

  • A light breakfast will be provided as well as a boxed lunch.



Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: 

  • Identify three benefits of engaging a consumers family members and social supports in his/her/their substance use treatment.

  • Develop three to five creative methods/skills to enhance meaningful "family" connection to build recovery capital.

  • Apply these engagement skills at any level of care to support individual and family recovery.

 

Youth & Young Adults Afternoon Presentation (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Description:

This presentation will provide a brief overview of how to support youth and young adults affected by substance use and their families. It will begin with a brief look at the impact of substance use on young people and their families, and effective strategies for supporting recovery. The presentation will then outline the continuum of care offered by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Services, including types of services across MA for youth impacted by substance use. Following this, it will introduce the Supporting Youth and Young Adults Impacted by Substance Use Toolkit V.1 , which offers information on how substance use affects young people, ways to provide support, and resources to help build individual, family, and program-level capacity.

Session Learning Objectives:

  • Identify at least two trauma-informed engagement strategies that promote youth autonomy in discussions about substance use and recovery.

  • Identify a type of services that can support youth who are at risk or in need of substance use support.

  • Insight into Supporting Youth and Young Adults Impacted by Substance Use Toolkit V.1 and how it can support care for youth .
