Workshop Overview The Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) serves as either an adjunct to treatment with suicidal individuals or as a stand-alone intervention in contexts such as crisis hotlines or emergency care settings. The SPI may be used with patients who have made a suicide attempt, have suicidal ideation, have psychiatric disorders that increase suicide risk, or who are otherwise determined to be at high risk for suicide. The SPI contains a prioritized written list of coping strategies and sources of support that patients can use during or preceding suicidal crises. The purpose of this training is to introduce and demonstrate how clinicians and patients may collaboratively develop and use safety plans as an intervention strategy to lower the risk of suicidal behavior.
Objectives: 1. Understand the rationale and evidence for the safety planning intervention (SPI) 2. Describe to and educate patients on the nature of the suicidal crisis and how SPI relates to it. 3. Conduct the 6-step safety planning process with eligible patients
