Discover the value of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in our intensive five-week virtual course, "Motivational Interviewing: Foundations and Strategies," offered by MASBIRT TTA. Empower individuals to make positive change by exploring and resolving ambivalence through MI's evidence-based communication style. Learn about MI principles, processes and strategies through self-paced learning, partner activities, and live sessions, with personalized written and verbal feedback to support your skill development.

Important Logistics:

  • This training course will run for five weeks from September 8 – October 10, 2025
  • Expect to dedicate 5 hours of your time per week, including:
    • 3 hours weekly in live Zoom sessions with practice activities
      • Live sessions will be held on Tuesdays 1PM – 4PM
      • Live session dates: 9/9, 9/16, 9/23, 9/30, 10/7
    • 1-2 hours weekly of self-paced work
      • Pre-recorded presentations, readings, quizzes
      • Complete each on your own time during the week it is assigned

This is an intensive course covering the learning typically involved in both a basic MI training and an intermediate level training. Participants must commit to participating in all five weeks, as each session builds on the previous.

Course objectives:

  • Discuss the four principles of MI (Spirit of MI).
  • Discuss the four processes of MI.
  • Demonstrate four skills used in MI (OARS).
  • Differentiate between change talk and sustain talk.
  • Demonstrate the “Testing the Waters” framework to test readiness for planning within an MI conversation.
  • Demonstrate the 5-step process to develop an MI based Action Plan.
