Course Description: The Medication Specialist Training prepares individuals in direct care positions to properly handle resident and patient medications in congregate care and residential treatment settings.  This course introduces participants to the principles of medication management and provides the foundational knowledge and baseline skills to complete the essential job functions of the Medication Specialist.



Target Audience: medication specialists, medication coordinators, recovery specialists, case managers, counselors, and other direct care staff who are responsible for medication management and/or who handle resident and patient medications



Learning Objectives : By the end of this training, participants should be able to:

  • List the 6 Rights of Medication Management
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of the Medication Specialist
  • Explain how to securely store and maintain a full chain of custody for all medications
  • Describe how to transcribe medication information and maintain accurate medication records 
  • Give examples of appropriate responses to medication non-adherence and improper use   
  • Identify BSAS reportable medication events
  • Explain how to properly dispose of controlled substances, sharps, inhalers, and Epi Pens®
