Description: Looking for a more supportive way to have conversations about substance use?
Join us for an interactive virtual training focused on learning and practicing skills based in Motivational Interviewing (MI), to enhance conversations about substance use. In this training, you’ll learn and practice 6 conversation skills that can be used individually or together to help you have more collaborative conversations focused on substance use.
This training will be interactive, with time to observe, practice, and debrief concepts through varied learning activities. Because we will be using breakout rooms, we hope participants will be open to actively participating from an individual computer with audio and video capability.
After this training, you will be able to:
- Identify elements of ambivalence as they relate to behavior change
- Describe how the basic tenants of Self Determination Theory are important to understanding motivation and behavior change
- Employ open questions to explore ambivalence
- Generate reflections to demonstrate empathy and understanding
- Demonstrate use of double-sided reflections to explore tradeoffs
- Implement Ask-Offer-Ask approach to offer information
- Use structured conversation guide to support conversations around substance use
Target Audience: Healthcare, behavioral health, or any other service providers who may encounter individuals who use substances and want to have conversations with those individuals about their use. This training can support anyone engaging in an SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment) process, particularly those who are having brief intervention conversations with individuals they are serving.
