Helping Men Recover: Overview and Facilitator Training

Event description
Description:
Helping Men Recover is a trauma-informed, gender-responsive group curriculum designed specifically to support holistic recovery for men in treatment for substance use disorders.

Combining theories of male psychological development, addiction, and trauma, the group helps men to consider the circumstances that led to their use of substances and to decide what kind of man they want to be in the future. It is based on the understanding that the way men are socialized to be men may sometimes seem to be in conflict with the principles of recovery.

The group uses interactive lecture, group discussion, skill practice and other activities to help men explore issues related to Self, Relationships, Sexuality and Spirituality, which are the areas that men have reported often lead to relapse.

Training overview:

Day 1, Morning: For potential Group Facilitators, Program Directors and Supervisors.  This overview of Helping Men Recover will help participants gain an understanding of the general format of the group intervention and its theoretical approach.  It is designed to help organizations decide whether this group is a good fit for their program and, if it is, support its implementation.

Day 1, Afternoon; Day 2: For those interested in facilitating Helping Men Recover groups. The training includes information about all aspects of implementation of the intervention, along with participation in selected exercises, so that facilitators understand the intervention as it is experienced by participants.
