Description
Grayken TTA is offering a FREE exam review course for RNs and APRNs who are working in the addiction field and interested in becoming a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). This course is intended to support nurses studying for the CARN and CARN-AP exams by reviewing the material the exams will cover. Eligibility criteria for the CARN and CARN-AP certifications can be found on C-NET's website.
This program's contact hours can be used toward the addictions continuing education contact hours needed to sit for the exam.
Intended audience
Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) with experience treating patients with addiction who intend to sit for the CARN or CARN-AP exam.
Speakers
Judith Austin, MSN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP (she/her)
Judith is a Clinical Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction TTA program, teaching the Addiction Nursing Certification Review course. In addition, Judith works at an inpatient substance use disorder treatment facility, has a private practice, and is the playwright and performer of a one-woman show entitled Spiro Spero, a play about addiction, utilizing art to promote education and awareness surrounding addiction at various colleges, nursing and medical schools, and conferences.
Vanessa Loukas, MSN, FNP-C, CARN-AP (she/her)
Vanessa is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine, a Clinical Educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) program, and a Nurse Practitioner at Boston Medical Center with clinical expertise in treating addiction, co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and infectious diseases in primary care with clinical interests in harm reduction, low-barrier treatment, and medical addiction groups. Her background in acute treatment services as a registered nurse and her current practice inform her work instructing the Addiction Nursing Certification Review course offered through Grayken Center for Addiction TTA since 2018.
Objectives
By the end of this certification review program, participants will have the knowledge necessary to:
- Identify the major categories of substances of misuse, including neurobiology, intoxication, withdrawal, and treatment.
- Explain methods used to identify, assess, and implement care for patients with substance use and addiction disorders.
- Identify the clinically relevant pharmacological characteristics of medications and medical interventions used to manage substance withdrawal, acute intoxication, and treatment.
- Outline tools and evidenced-based practices for monitoring and supporting patients with substance use and process addictions.
- Apply nursing process in identifying, planning, assessing, and implementing care plans for patients with substance use disorder and process addictions.
- Have a basic understanding of therapeutic interventions and how to apply them for the treatment of substance disorders and process addictions.
- Navigate ethical dilemmas related to substance use disorder in nursing.

Accreditation information
REQUIREMENTS for credit
This is a two-part training. You must attend both parts 1 & 2 to be eligible for credit or a certificate of completion.
- Register for training
- Arrive/log into the training no more than 10 minutes after designated start time for program.
- Identify yourself by typing your full name into the chat and ensuring your zoom name matches that used to register for training (or you cannot be marked on attendance).
- Be present through the end of the activity (i.e. until the designated end time of training).
- Complete evaluation within 2 weeks of program completion.
Please note this policy is strictly enforced for accreditation purposes. Participants will forfeit collection of credit and certificates of completion if more than 10 minutes of the training is missed.
Nursing
Boston Medical Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Association Massachusetts, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Participants who complete and return the evaluation and stay for the entire program (Parts 1 & 2) will be awarded a total of 7.25 contact hours, with 2.00 contact hours classified as pharmacology.
