Description
Grayken TTA is offering a FREE exam review course for RNs and APRNs who are working in the addiction field and interested in becoming a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse - Advanced Practice (CARN-AP). This course is intended to support nurses studying for the CARN and CARN-AP exams by reviewing the material the exams will cover. Eligibility criteria for the CARN and CARN-AP certifications can be found on C-NET's website.
This program's contact hours can be used toward the addictions continuing education contact hours needed to sit for the exam.
Intended audience
Registered Nurses (RNs) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) with experience treating patients with addiction who intend to sit for the CARN or CARN-AP exam.

Judith Austin, MSN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP (she/her)
Judith is a clinical nurse educator for or Boston Medical Center's (BMC) Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance and a board certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who has a private practice and works at an inpatient substance use disorder treatment facility. Judith earned her master’s in nursing from Regis College and is certified as a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board.
Vanessa Loukas, MSN, FNP-C, CARN-AP (she/her)
Vanessa is a clinical nurse educator for Boston Medical Center's (BMC) Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance, a Family Nurse Practitioner in General Internal Medicine at BMC, and an assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Vanessa earned her master’s in nursing from Simmons University and is certified as a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board.
Objectives
Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:
- Identify the major categories of substances of use, including neurobiology, intoxication, withdrawal, and treatment.
- Describe methods used to identify, assess, and implement care for patients with substance use and addiction disorders.
- Recognize the clinically relevant pharmacological characteristics of medications and medical interventions used to manage substance withdrawal, acute intoxication, and treatment.
- Outline tools and evidenced-based practices for monitoring and supporting patients with substance use and process addictions.
- Apply nursing process in identifying, planning, assessing, and implementing care plans for patients with substance use disorder and process addictions.
- Develop a basic understanding of therapeutic interventions and how to apply them for the treatment of substance disorders and process addictions.
- Identify ethical dilemmas related to substance use disorder.

Accreditation information
REQUIREMENTS for credit
This is a two-part training. You must attend both parts 1 & 2 to be eligible for credit or a certificate of completion.
- Register for training
- Arrive/log into the training no more than 10 minutes after designated start time for program.
- Ensure the email you used to register is the same email you use for Zoom registration when entering the training and that your full name matches your Zoom name to be marked as attended.
- Be present through the end of the activity (i.e. until the designated end time of training).
- Complete evaluation within 2 weeks of program completion.
Please note this policy is strictly enforced for accreditation purposes. Participants will forfeit collection of credit and certificates of completion if more than 10 minutes of the training is missed.
