Description: Join us for a dynamic 2-hour training where we’ll dive into the nuances of using reflections in conversations. This vital Motivational Interviewing (MI) skill goes beyond the surface, serving as a catalyst to build engagement, cultivate empathy, and navigate ambivalence surrounding a behavior change like substance use. Through hands-on practice activities, we’ll explore various types of reflections, and work to increase your proficiency in generating complex reflections. Come elevate your MI skills in an interactive session where practice takes center stage!

After this training, you will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between a simple reflection and a complex reflection
  • Categorize different types of simple and complex reflections
  • Demonstrate a variety of approaches to generate complex reflections
  • Use reflections to explore an individual’s perspective as it relates to behavior change

Target Audience: Service providers who want to build their capacity to use reflections in conversations about change. Clinical and non-clinical service providers welcome! This training can support anyone working to incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques into their conversations about behavior change and substance use, as well as those engaging in SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment). Prior exposure to MI and reflections is helpful.
