Description
As part of the twice-monthly SUD Care Continuum ECHO® series, Judith Austin, PMHNP, CARN-AP, will strengthen interdisciplinary to evaluating and treating adults with suspected ADHD and co-occurring substance use disorders, and differentiate symptoms of ADHD from substance use, intoxication, withdrawal, and other psychiatric conditions with overlapping presentations. She will also apply evidence-informed strategies for assessing and diagnosing ADHD in adults with substance use disorders, including considerations for treatment planning and coordination of care. The didactic will be followed by a de-identified patient case presentation from an ECHO® participant and recommendations from the panel of experts and attendees.
The Substance Use Disorder Care Continuum ECHO® (SUD Care Continuum ECHO®) series offers training and support in addiction treatment, with a focus on supporting front line addiction treatment workforce. This includes health providers in Acute Treatment Services (ATS), Crisis Stabilization Services (CSS), Transitional Support Services (TSS), Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP), long-term residential program, sober and recovery homes, primary care, and psychiatry. This free, case-based tele-mentoring program is designed to increase the capacity of health care providers to implement high-quality and evidence-based addiction treatment.

Providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, peer supports, other clinical staff, and non-clinicians.

Judith Austin, MSN, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP (she/her)
Judith is a clinical nurse educator for or Boston Medical Center's (BMC) Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance and a board certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who has a private practice and works at an inpatient substance use disorder treatment facility. Judith earned her master’s in nursing from Regis College and is certified as a Certified Addiction Registered Nurse – Advanced Practice (CARN-AP) through the Addictions Nursing Certification Board.
Objectives
Following this training, participants will have the knowledge to:
1. Strengthen interdisciplinary approaches to evaluating and treating adults with suspected ADHD and co-occurring substance use disorders.
2. Differentiate symptoms of ADHD from substance use, intoxication, withdrawal, and other psychiatric conditions with overlapping presentations.
3. Apply evidence-informed strategies for assessing and diagnosing ADHD in adults with substance use disorders, including considerations for treatment planning and coordination of care.
