When Substance Use Shows Up in Therapy: Practical Skills for Mental Health Clinicians

Many mental health clinicians and social workers encounter substance use in their work but often feel uncertain about how to assess it or how to address it effectively in treatment. This 90-minute continuing education training offers a practical, nonjudgmental introduction to understanding substance use within mental health practice. Participants will learn to recognize the continuum of substance use, explore approaches for treating co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns, and determine when and how to refer clients for specialized care. Through case examples and motivational interviewing–informed strategies, clinicians will develop greater confidence in having open, empathetic, and clinically grounded conversations about substance use.
