Training (skill building)

This interactive training will explore health equity issues related to tobacco and nicotine use among adults receiving treatment for substance use disorders and mental health conditions. Participants will learn about the negative effects of tobacco and nicotine use, on behavioral health treatment and recovery. Additionally, newer nicotine vaping products and nicotine pouches will be discussed.

We will explore how to apply the Stages of Change model and the Motivational Interviewing counseling approach to tobacco and nicotine dependence treatment. Participants will gain practical skills and strategies to enhance motivation and confidence during the early stages of change. Additionally, they will learn evidence-based treatment for individuals who are ready to quit or reduce their tobacco and nicotine use. Throughout the training, participants will have opportunities to apply concepts and practice skills in small breakout group activities.
