Description

The legalization of recreational cannabis for adults has changed the paradigm of how professional are engaging in conversation with adolescents about substance use.

How do you approach a conversation with youth about their substance use?  What does the neuroscience teach us about the impact of substance use on a developing brain? How do you know if a youth needs a referral to substance use treatment?

This forum is intended for professionals (mental health practitioners, social workers, school counselors or nurses, clergy, case managers, etc.), working with youth and young adults (those under age 21).  The purpose of these forums is to increase the workforces’ capacity to facilitate developmentally appropriate conversations with adolescents about their substance use, how to determine when a referral to treatment is necessary, and understand an evidence based treatment model available to youth.

Participants will:

  • Learn the current state and federal data on prevalence of adolescent substance use;
  • Understand brain development and the impact of substances on the developing brain;
  • Learn effective strategies for addressing substance use;
  • Practice through role play initiating a conversation with a youth about their substance use; and
  • Understand the evidence based developmentally appropriate outpatient treatment model for adolescent substance use and how to refer a youth.
