Session Description:

Adolescence is also a time when many chronic physical, mental health and substance use conditions first emerge. Alcohol and drug use in adolescents continues to be a major public health problem as use often increases risky behaviors which may result in harm to self or others, such as transmission of sexually transmitted infections, violence, and driving under the influence. In 2014, [3] an estimated 26.8% of 8th graders and 66.0% of 12th graders had consumed alcohol in their lifetime. In addition, 20.3% of 8th graders and 49.1% of 12th graders had ever used illicit drugs.

This session will describe the successful SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) that has been proven effective in diagnosing and treating adolescents for alcohol and drug use. It will focus on tools for health and social service providers to easily facilitate SBIRT using motivational interviewing (MI) techniques. Through MI training providers will learn skills to effectively influence adolescents to make positive behavioral changes that will support better health.  This session will provide tools to apply this intervention and treatment to not only to those adolescents who using alcohol and/or drugs, but also for those at-risk of developing these disorders.

The session will be presented by Matthew C. Aalsma, PhD, HSPP, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Indiana University, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics: Adolescent Medicine
