The Institute for Health and Recovery (IHR) will be leading a series of regional trainings.  These trainings are open to DPH, Bureau of Substance Addiction providers as well as other youth serving agencies and departments.

Description: 

This 3-hour training is designed for beginning to mid-level experienced clinicians as well as direct care staff and administrators to raise their awareness to the benefits of understanding the impact of compassion fatigue on human service workers, and how creating space to practice consistent, daily self-care will lead to a prolonged, fruitful career helping others.



      The core content includes defining Compassion Fatigue and its subsets (Secondary and Vicarious Trauma as well as burnout), identifying staff symptoms of Compassion Fatigue, the benefits of deep breathing and defining mindfulness, an introduction to Lisa Najavits’ Grounding exercises (adapted from “Seeking Safety”), how to begin one’s self-care practices, the tenets of Compassion Satisfaction and Resiliency, and discussion and activities to develop helpful self-care practices.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to 

  • Educate participants about the impact of Compassion Fatigue and develop an enhanced understanding of its impact on one’s cognitive, social and behavioral functioning
  • Identify symptoms of Secondary Trauma and strategies to prevent them
  • Provide training and technical assistance to the audience to understand the positive physiological impacts of mindfulness practices
  • Assist attendees in identifying and utilizing hands-on Self-Care practices within the milieu as well as away from work
  • Assess participants’ development of their Self-Care and Mindfulness regiments and encourage them to integrate these practices into their daily lives
