Description: This training will review what trauma is and how the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study has informed our knowledge about trauma. We will examine the complex interaction of trauma and tobacco use. How does smoking affect a person with a history of trauma? What function does tobacco use serve for survivors of trauma? The principles of trauma-informed care will be reviewed and applied to tobacco dependence treatment. We will explore the intersection of trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing and stages of change in the treatment of tobacco dependence with people in recovery from other substance use disorders.
