Description: 

This training focuses on synthetic research chemicals that mimic popular substances of use, discusses their effects and side effects, and examines the various classes of synthetic drugs including synthetic cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids, and synthetic opioids. The workshop also provides an overview of the latest trends in marijuana use among youth and its effects, including vaping and related public health concerns.

This training will also review the different levels of care currently available in Massachusetts, licensed by the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS)/Office of Youth and Young Adult Services, including detox/stabilization, residential treatment, recovery high schools, outpatient services, etc. Family recovery supports will also be identified. 

This training is aimed towards anyone working with youth and young adults; prior knowledge is not required.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to

  • To define synthetic drugs, have basic knowledge about the history of their use in this country, and understand why it is so difficult to regulate them.
  • To differentiate between the various classes of synthetic drugs (synthetic cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids, and synthetic opioids), their effects and side effects.
  • To identify trends in current use of synthetic drugs among youth.
  • To distinguish the impact of e-cigarettes and vaping (nicotine and THC) on youth, and resources to address both marijuana use disorder and tobacco cessation.
  • To associate referrals to licensed treatment for youth and young adults with substance use disorders, and guide their families toward recovery resources as well.
