Recovery as an organizing paradigm is becoming more accepted and validated among scientific, medical, and government communities. Racial-ethnic minorities, Black Americans in particular, suffer a disproportionate burden of substance-related health and social consequence despite having a lower or equivalent prevalence of substance use and disorders.

Current science on racial-ethnic health equity in substance use disorders will be presented and future challenges and opportunities in recovery science.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to

  • List 6 recovery support services on the continuum of care for substance use disorders
  • Describe the role of building recovery capital.
  • Understand how race works in science
  • Describe course of illness and recovery for individuals who identify as black
  • List micro and macro discriminations that occur or to people in recovery.
