Event description

Description:

Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based style of communication focused on helping individuals explore and resolve ambivalence by drawing out their intrinsic motivation and capacity for change.

In this two-part training series, participants will be (re)introduced to the overall philosophy or Spirit of MI, as well as specific processes and skills that can increase their effectiveness when talking with individuals about behavior change. In addition, participants will learn to distinguish change talk from sustain talk as it relates to a specific target behavior, and apply MI concepts to evoke and strengthen change talk.

Through structured learning opportunities, participants will have the chance to observe, practice, and reflect on the use of MI to develop more intentional and effective conversations regarding behavior change.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to

  • Describe why MI is an effective style of communication when working with individuals on behavior change
  • Describe how the components of the Spirit of MI facilitate conversations about change
  • Identify the four processes of MI
  • Identify four MI skills that can be used to help motivate individuals to change unhealthy or unsafe behaviors
  • Distinguish between sustain talk and change talk
  • Identify ways to evoke change talk
