This is a virtual ZOOM training, the ZOOM log-in information will be sent out as we approach the training date.

Please thoroughly read through the Description section below; all participants will need to order a hardcopy, or download a PDF, of the Getting Started with Tobacco Awareness Groups booklet prior to the training start date.

Description: This workshop is designed to introduce the new booklet, “Getting Started with Tobacco Awareness Groups,” developed by the TAPE Project of IHR and available for free at the MA Clearinghouse. The handouts and worksheets in the booklet are designed for use by staff, group participants, and individual clients in substance use treatment settings. The training will introduce the concept of “tobacco awareness” and discuss how it differs from and also builds the foundation for tobacco education and treatment/cessation. Since many clients entering substance use treatment are not thinking about stopping tobacco use (including vaping) early in recovery, this booklet offers practical ways to work with clients in the precontemplation stage of addressing their tobacco use.  Participants will leave with strategies for integrating tobacco awareness activities into individual and group treatment, as well as concrete next steps for implementing dedicated tobacco awareness and tobacco treatment groups.

Objectives:

Upon completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Participants will become familiar with how to utilize handouts and worksheets in a new booklet designed to help them get started with tobacco awareness groups
  • Participants will gain multiple strategies for introducing and integrating tobacco awareness activities into individual and group substance use treatment sessions
  • Participants will develop the format for a 30-minute tobacco awareness group that can be implemented post-training
  • Participants will develop a multi-session tobacco awareness group curriculum that can be implemented post-training
  • Participants will increase their understanding of the differences between a tobacco awareness group and a tobacco cessation group, and how to tailor approaches with clients
  • Participants will develop new treatment skills and strategies with support and feedback from trainers and other participants
