The presentation is designed to provide an overview of the development of medication assisted therapies, including historical and social contexts in relation to how MAT’s support the Harm Reduction approach to treatment of Substance Use Disorders including but not limited to Opiate Use Disorders.

 

Special emphasis of this presentation is to promote awareness of the need to integrate MAT’s in rural populations and to promote collaboration between clinicians and medical providers in non-facility settings to increase the provision of MAT’s and counseling services to individuals with SUD’s where urban MAT treatment modalities are not always feasible. MAT’s and counseling for special and vulnerable populations including the elderly, pregnant women and people with co-occurring mental disorders will also be addressed with special emphasis on the need for integrated counseling, case management with the provision of MAT’s for increased positive treatment outcomes.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Attendees will be educated on the progression of Medication Assisted Therapies and Harm Reduction Model.
  • Attendees will be able to identify 3 different types of MAT’s for Opiate Use Disorders and describe the federal guidelines related to clinical needs to be met in order for clients to receive MAT’s in a facility or in a rural setting.
  •  Attendees will be able to identify 2 types of MAT’s used in the treatment for Alcohol Use Disorders.
  • Attendees will be able to identify and discuss specific needs regarding MAT practices for special populations, specifically the elderly, pregnant women and people with co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Attendees will be able to list at least 3 high risk areas hindering treatment success for people in MAT treatment and discuss how to address using the Harm Reduction Model providing 3-4 Relapse Prevention skills.
