DESCRIPTION:

Grounding our work in why and how people change behaviors, this training will cover how the processes, spirit and skills of Motivational Interviewing all work together to support practitioners to have more helpful conversations about change. Upon completion, participants will be able to apply the foundations of MI in their work, and explore opportunities to incorporate MI adherent strategies into behavior change conversations.

This two-day training is a blend of didactic material with ample time devoted to learning and practicing skills. Commitment to attend both sessions is required, as each session builds on the previous one.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the mechanisms of how and why people change behaviors (ambivalence, importance + confidence, self-confrontation, decision making)
  • Identify the goal of the helper within each of the four processes of an MI conversation
  • Discuss how the four components of the Spirit of MI create psychological safety to facilitate conversations about change
  • Demonstrate use of MI skills to clarify focus of a change goal or target behavior
  • Demonstrate use of MI skills to evoke and heighten ambivalence
