Effective Use of Group Therapy in Substance Abuse Treatment

Knowing how to intervene effectively when faced with critical moments in a group session will enhance the therapeutic experience for the group members and foster confidence in the group leader.  This six-hour workshop will explore the typical crises that arise in the context of group work and provide participants with the knowledge to assess the effectiveness of their interventions.  Prior knowledge of group stages of development and interactional dynamics is a prerequisite.  

Objectives: 

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • State no fewer than three stages of group development. 
  • State no fewer than three boundaries established by group members, and their significance in successful group leadership.
  • State no less than five elements of successful group intervention.
  • Identify strategic approaches to the various crises that occur in the context of the group session.
  • State no less than three skills associated with effective group leadership.  
  • Identify areas of professional growth that will strengthen their ability to run groups.
  • Define and describe no fewer than 3 curative factors that enhance relationship building, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • State no fewer than 3 ways in which co-existing disorders impact group participation and recovery efforts.
