Description:

Trying to help someone change can be challenging. Helpers can have a hard time resisting the “righting reflex” and often feel stuck in a wrestling match with the very person they are trying to help. Motivational Interviewing (MI) offers an approach to have respectful and effective conversations that increase adolescents’ motivation to change unhealthy or unsafe behaviors.

This virtual workshop will provide a basic overview by (re)introducing participants to the principles of MI, as well as specific strategies and skills that can be easily incorporated into brief conversations with young people.

Objectives:

  • Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to
  • Describe why MI is an effective style of communication when working with adolescents
  • Describe how the components of the Spirit of MI facilitate conversations about change
  • Identify two MI skills that can be used to help motivate adolescents to change unhealthy or unsafe behaviors like substance use
