Skill Building in Motivational Interviewing for Program Teams: Clinicians and Supervisors Day 1 of 5

DESCRIPTION:

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, evidence based method for engaging clients in a self-examination of the issues they face, and development of their motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence about changing. It is being used with considerable success throughout the MA residential and outpatient treatment and recovery system.

This 5-day training series is designed for teams of up to 4 people (one of whom must be in a supervisory role with the others) from any agency/service programs who want to learn, in depth, how to implement MI and sustain its use over time

Day one (9/10/15) will cover:

  • Stages of readiness to change
  • Spirit of MI
  • Components of motivational interviewing (OARS: opened-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening & summarization)
  • Use of a readiness ruler
  • Use of a decisional balance
  • Use of a change plan
  • MI strategies for working more effectively with resistant clients

     

OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Use MI appropriately and with fidelity to the model in both clinical and clinical supervision settings.
  • Identify and work to strengthen the use of MI tools and techniques where this is needed.
  • Maintain the use of MI over time within the agency’s program of services, by drawing on the strength and resources of the clinician/supervisor team.  

Day two (9/17/15) will cover interactive exercises focusing on:

  • Completing a stages of change assessment
  • Utilizing Pre-contemplation Stage Strategies
  • Utilizing Contemplation Stage Strategies
  • Utilizing Preparation/Determination Stage Strategies
  • Completing a Decisional Balance
  • Completing a Change Plan
  • Utilizing MI to deal with client resistance

Day 3: Thursday, October 15, 2015:

AM for Both Clinicians and Supervisors:

This MI training session will be comprised of didactic presentation, video interview clips and interactive exercises to enhance the acquisition of MI skills by participants. Participants will be expected to present cases for MI role-plays.



PM for Supervisors Only:

This afternoon session will be dedicated to discussion among supervisors of strategies to support and supervise the use of MI by clinical staff.  Participants will review any special challenges they are experiencing in supporting the adoption of MI by staff.

Day 4: Wednesday, November 18, 2015:

AM Session for Both Clinicians and Supervisors: 

This MI training session will be comprised of didactic presentation, video clips and interactive exercises to enhance the acquisition of MI skills by participants.  Participants will be expected to present cases for MI role-plays.



PM for Clinicians Only: 

This afternoon session will be dedicated to an extended discussion among clinical professionals of the use of MI with clients.  Participants will review any special challenges they are experiencing in its practical application with special client populations and/or clinical settings.

Day 5: Thursday, December 10, 2015:  

Clinicians and Supervisors will be together for the entire day.  Session will focus on each group assisting each other in reviewing their MI skill building experiences and agency implementation efforts.  Strategies to ensure MI fidelity will be presented.  Primary emphasis will be on presenting cases to highlight the challenges and opportunities each team has faced during their MI implementation project.

The deadline for registration and payment in full for your team (3 or more) is Thursday, September 3, 2015 (or when the workshop reaches capacity). Space is limited, so be sure to register early.

Participants are expected to attend all five sessions in order to receive certificates of attendance or continuing education credits
