Description:
As part of its commitment to helping agencies provide the most cost-effective therapies for treating alcohol and drug problems, BSAS is providing a one and one-half day training for addiction counselors (and their supervisors) to enhance their skills in providing evidence-based brief treatment for addiction.
The primary goal of this training is to provide clinicians and their supervisors with an introduction to the manualized brief treatment approach to outpatient substance abuse counseling that was developed for the MASBIRT project. These training dates are separated by 4 weeks to allow for follow-up discussion of strategies for implementing components of the treatment.
Session participants will be exposed to components of evidence-based treatment for substance use. The approach that will be presented uses motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques in 6 -12 sessions that focus on building client skills to positively change unhealthy behaviors and maintain those changes. While no single clinical approach has been proven to work with all people struggling with substance abuse or dependence, recent research has found that brief treatment approaches that emphasize client motivation, cognition, and behavior are effective for treating a broad range of substance use disorders. This training will include “hands – on” experiential learning through use of live demonstration, training video clips and practice.
Brief Treatment training will assume a basic knowledge of MI and CBT.
Supervisors are encouraged to attend with clinicians from your agency.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify basic components of Brief Treatment.
- Identify treatment approaches best matched for client skills deficits.
- Recognize how co-occurring mental health conditions maintain ongoing substance use.
- Conduct a functional analysis of substance use.
- Recognize client skills deficits that contribute to the maintenance of dependence.
- Formulate skills-based treatment planning that address skills deficits and co-occurring mental health conditions.
