Foundations of Clinical Supervision - Online Course and 2-Day Face to Face Training

This course includes two linked components (both of which are required to receive a certificate of completion):

  • A self-paced online course useful to both beginning and experienced supervisors and 
  • A face-to-face training for supervisors in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery settings.

This course totals 30 contact hours and introduces clinical supervisors, along with persons preparing to become supervisors, to  the knowledge and skills essential to the practice of supervision.  The curriculum is an introductory course intended as a first step in preparing clinicians to provide meaningful supervision.  

Objectives:

​Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Define the primary goals of their own clinical supervision practice.
  • Articulate characteristics of various models that can be applied to clinical supervision.
  • Understand the value of positive supervisory alliance.
  • Define when to use each of the three different modalities to establish a productive learning environment.
  • Understand the value of a developmental perspective.
  • Identify the importance of on-going, timely and objective performance evaluation to both the supervisee and the agency.
  • Identify a process for facilitating professional growth of supervisee.
  • Define the primary goals of their clinical supervision practice as mental health counselors
  • Articulate characteristics of various models that can be applied to clinical supervision of mental health counselors.

Step 1: Participants of the Clinical Supervision Foundations course must first complete a 10 module (14 contact hours) self-paced online course. This allows individuals to be introduced to theories, definitions, roles, issues and practices germane to developing supervisory skills.

Once on the site, scroll down the page to "Clinical Supervision and Administration" course, then choose the "Register Now" button, under continuing education information.  Your username and password will be emailed to you and you will be able to start the course within two to four hours.  If after three hours you are still unable to access the course, please contact our 24/7 Online Course Support Center for assistance. 



When you register, for the online course, please select the first bullet "to take the course and earn a certificate of completion!" PLEASE DO NOT SELECT THE OPTION TO PAY $70 AND EARN NAADAC AND NASW CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS UNLESS YOU NEED SW CREDITS.  ​ATTC-NE will be providing the continuing education credits for the online course and 2-day face-to-face training after the 2-day training and assignment is completed and submitted to the presenters.



Participants must complete the full 10 module online course before attending the 2-day face-to-face training, and must present their printed certificate when they arrive at the training site.

Step 2: The second part of the Clinical Supervision Foundations course is a 14 hour face-to-face training and a two hour worksite assignment (16 contact hours total). It provides participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of key issues, as well as practice facilitating some of the discussion and skill building components. The worksite assignment includes a review of clinical supervision competencies, a self-evaluation, and the creation of a personal plan to continue developing proficiency in clinical supervision. This assignment is made at the conclusion of the face-to-face training and must be submitted to the trainer(s) prior to receiving a certificate for 16 contact hours.

Successful completion of the introductory online course is required for participation in the face-to-face segment of the course.
