Engagement Skills & Building a Rapport with "Hard to Reach" Clients

Event description

Description:

Presented by: Susan Dargon-Hart, LICSW, is currently the Director of Behavioral Health at Casa Esperanza Inc. She oversees Casa’s fully bilingual (Spanish/English) outpatient clinic, which includes a SOAP program, and individual and group counseling for individuals and families co-occurring disorders. She also is the director of Casa’s three SAMHSA funded grants, Tu Bienestar for high risk Latinas, Mi Camino Peer to Peer project, and CASA-CHESS a smartphone technology grant. Prior to coming to Casa this fall, Ms. Dargon-Hart was the Director of Outpatient and HIV Services at the Institute for Health and Recovery (IHR), a statewide policy, program/systems development, training, services and research organization for 12 years. Ms. Dargon-Hart co-developed and directed IHR’s Outpatient Treatment Services for individuals and families with substance use and co-occurring disorders (mental health and/or trauma). She also developed and oversaw IHR’s/MA Department of Children and Families Substance Abuse Engagement Project, which uses a similar outreach and engagement model as IHR Outpatient Treatment Services. Ms. Dargon-Hart also directed Project HEAL, a Shelter Plus Care housing program for homeless HIV+ and Hepatitis C individuals and families in Lowell. Additionally, Ms. Dargon-Hart provides training on substance use/co-occurring disorders, Motivational Interviewing, and engaging families and individuals struggling with substance use.

This workshop will highlight engagement skills necessary to build a positive rapport with individuals ambivalent about substance abuse treatment and recovery from the first visit to graduation. The Engagement Model presented is client-driven, anticipatory, and culturally sensitive. It will also include advocacy that may be crucial for family members in accessing appropriate health, mental health and substance use treatment and recovery services. The presenter will offer strategies and lessons learned through 22 years of clinical experience, and 15 years of program development and management. The model to be presented is rooted in the Evidence-Informed and Evidence-Based Practices of Relational-Cultural Theory and Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and relies heavily on using trauma-informed, strengths-based Motivational Interviewing (MI) for engagement.

Objectives:

  • Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
  • Understand how to implement two Motivational Interviewing tools/exercises to successfully engage clients.
  • Identify and utilize treatment language that is strength-based, client-driven and builds rapport through role plays and exercises.
  • Identify and utilize strategies to increase client retention.
  • Increase awareness of needs and techniques to integrate trauma-informed care into engagement strategies.
